Architecture and interiors for the way you live
Gareth Allison Design is an independent architectural practice led by Gareth Allison, an ARB-registered architect and member of the Royal Institute of British Architects.
With studios in London, Chelmsford and Harpenden, and working across London, Essex, Hertfordshire and the rest of the UK, the practice designs house extensions, whole-house transformations, interiors and new homes, and helps clients discover what an existing building or site could become before they commit to anything.
Seeing things differently
Good architecture often begins by looking at something familiar in a different way.
An existing building may hold possibilities that have been overlooked. A change of layout might achieve more than an extension. A difficult site, or a tight budget, can suggest an entirely different and better approach.
Rather than starting from a ready-made solution, we take time to understand the building, the site and the people who will use it, to question assumptions and to test ideas. The aim is architecture that is inventive, purposeful and carefully resolved, from the first sketch to the final detail.

Our servicesProjects of every scale and budget, across London, Essex, Hertfordshire and beyond. Constraints are often where the most inventive solutions begin.
Feasibility and early advice
The best time to involve an architect is at the very beginning. A feasibility study tests what a home or site could achieve, including layouts, extensions, planning prospects and likely costs, before you commit to anything. It often reveals opportunities no one had considered.
Extensions and transformations
Rear, side-return and wraparound extensions, loft and basement conversions and whole-house remodelling, including work to listed buildings and in conservation areas. We look beyond the immediate brief to how the whole house could work better.
New homes
Individual houses shaped by their setting, the people who will live in them and the opportunities of the site, with a strong interest in low-carbon and long-lasting design.
Interior architecture
Spatial planning, materials, lighting and detail, including bespoke cabinetry and joinery designed and engineered as part of the architecture rather than added afterwards.
About the practice
Gareth Allison founded the practice in 2012 after more than seven years leading residential projects in London. His work ranges from the runner-up design for a commemorative tower for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games to a glazed extension in Crouch End featured in the Evening Standard.
Working directly with every client, Gareth brings over twenty years of design, planning and construction experience to each project, large or small.
